Company description

AFRY offers services in engineering, design, digitalization and consulting. We are dedicated experts in industry, energy and infrastructure, creating value for future generations. AFRY has a global reach with deep roots in the Nordics. Together we accelerate the transition to a more sustainable society.

About the role

Do you want to do your thesis in bridge and civil engineering? AFRY Infrastructure is a large organization within AFRY, with over 7000 dedicated employees, we help our clients with technical solutions both on the client and contractor side. Our engineers are experts in creating tomorrow's infrastructure through complex constructions. The infrastructure in Sweden is being expanded at a record pace with new railways, roads and urban environments - we therefore see a great need to engage more competent employees and are now looking for you who want to write your thesis with us.

Our design group in Malmö has developed the following proposal for a degree project.

Optimized design of pile groups

When developing pile groups, several factors are of interest. These include acting loads, geotechnics, the profile of the rock surface, pile types and the location of piles and pile inclination. When calculating, it can be a time-consuming process to arrive at a good solution. Partly because of the above-mentioned factors, but also because there are no programs on the market that can visualize this interaction. The purpose of the thesis is to evaluate these different factors and their impact on different pile groups.

Forced effects of temperature gradients in plate girder bridges

The temperature gradient load case in Eurocode leads to a prevented free curvature of the structure for plate girder bridges. In slab models, this leads to large tensile forces in the connection between vertical and horizontal parts. In reality, the cracking of the concrete will reduce the stiffness and thus reduce the forces, but this is not reflected in linear elastic modeling of concrete. Therefore, this leads to an unnecessarily large amount of reinforcement across the direction of travel of the bridge. For other load cases, such as support displacement, the load effects can be reduced by taking creep into account. This is not the case for temperature gradient as it can occur after a short time. The aim is to investigate whether there are ways to prevent or minimize the forcing effects for concrete bridges caused by temperature gradient.

Timeline

Start at the end of January 2025 and completion during the spring (equivalent to 30 credits). The thesis is carried out with some possibility to sit at AFRY's office but mainly at the university. Submitted report and presentation of the work is expected to be completed during the month of June.

Requirement specification

We are looking for you who plan to complete your degree project in the spring of 2025 and who are studying the civil engineering program in civil engineering with a focus on construction.

You are in the final stage of your education and are interested in some of the above-mentioned areas and have an interest in bridge and civil engineering.

You should have competence in nonlinear FE analysis, visual programming and geotechnics. Good knowledge of Swedish and English is a requirement.
