About the role

Do you want to do your thesis in space technology? AFRY helps space actors develop optimized and sustainable systems and services, based on advanced space technologies, robust and flexible infrastructure and intelligent digital solutions. Our expertise and experience in the space field can be used for both commercial and socially important activities, as well as to strengthen Sweden's security and defense capabilities.

We are looking for you who plan to complete your degree project in the spring of 2025 and who are studying the Master of Science in Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Systems in Technology and Society, IT or equivalent.

The graduate job in Space Engineering is suitable for you with an interest in one or more of the areas below:

Possible topics or projects:


Here are some exjob options that we would be happy to discuss with you:

  • Robust Mobile Satellite Communications: Continued development of an existing demonstrator platform and performance optimization of implemented adaptive array antenna technology.
  • Space Situational Awareness: Develop and evaluate a method to improve the accuracy and timeliness of space situational awareness, with a focus on reducing the risk of collisions between space objects.
  • Satellite Systems: Optimization of satellite constellations and sensor performance for Earth observation applications.
  • AI-based cognitive radio technology for improved satellite communications: Develop and evaluate an AI-based cognitive radio technology to improve spectrum efficiency and reduce interference in satellite communications. May also target intelligent decision support for operator.
  • Satellite Communications for 6G: Develop and evaluate a methodology to integrate satellite communications into 6G networks, focusing on creating a mobile robust communication system that can provide reliable coverage in any environment. It may also focus on investigating the technical challenges and opportunities of integrating satellite communications into consumer mobiles or for military applications using 6G.
  • Unmanned Flying Systems (drones): We have a number of ideas that we are happy to discuss further.

The job will include a balanced mix of learning, theory, analysis, modeling & simulation and evaluation of methods and in some cases be able to test concepts with real data or implement algorithms in demonstrator hardware.


The idea is that the thesis takes a holistic approach to the current system / development platform and focuses more deeply in a few selected areas in consultation with the supervisor.

We prefer that this thesis is carried out by two students, where a suitable division of work areas is determined in consultation based on educational focus and interest. A thesis carried out by a single student can also be discussed. It is possible to apply for the thesis in pairs, but the choice of student(s) is on an individual basis.

To support you, there will be a team of different experts, with a designated official supervisor.

Timeline

Starting at the end of January 2025 and completion in the spring (equivalent to 30 credits). The thesis is carried out at our office in Uppsala.

Requirement specification

You are in the final stage of your education as a civil engineer with a specialization in Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Systems in Technology and Society, IT or equivalent and have an interest in some of the above-mentioned areas as well as getting to know a large international technology and design company.
