Company description

AFRY offers services in engineering, design, digitalization and consulting. We are dedicated experts in industry, energy and infrastructure, creating value for future generations. AFRY has a global reach with deep roots in the Nordics. Together we accelerate the transition to a more sustainable society.

About the role

Do you want to do your thesis in energy technology with large elements of thermodynamic modeling and a focus on nuclear power?

AFRY works with several major energy players, including nuclear power as one of our major clients we work actively with. Our competencies and experience in the field are broad and we always want to expand our knowledge.

The thesis will contain a balanced mix of reading, theory, analysis, modeling and simulation as well as evaluation of methods and economic viability. The idea is that the thesis takes a holistic approach to how heat is generated and utilized in a nuclear plant today and how it could be used more efficiently for a theoretical redesign, when introducing district heating and cooling and hydrogen production through electrolysis.

We prefer that this thesis is carried out by one to two students. Support will be provided by both the university and AFRY where an official supervisor will be assigned.

If you have your own idea of how you would like to redirect the thesis, we are happy to discuss it and see how it could be suitable for our business and identified needs in the future.

Timeline

Start at the end of January 2025 and completion during the spring (equivalent to 30 credits). The thesis is carried out with the possibility of sitting at both AFRY's office and at the university. The submitted report and presentation of the work is expected to be ready during the month of June.

Objectives

The work aims to give you the opportunity to map the efficiency and effectiveness of nuclear power in the introduction of various technologies that are becoming increasingly common in the fossil industry, as well as account for its economic sustainability through a techno-economic analysis.

Method

Using the software Ebsilon, you will construct a base model for a generic Nordic nuclear power plant of generation III+. Based on the base model, you will then evaluate what is required for each technology, how they affect the outcome of the simulation of the plant's efficiencies and production. And perform a techno-economic evaluation based on today's spot prices for electricity, heat and hydrogen to account for how economically viable each technology would be, and for when and under what circumstances each technology would be favorable.

What do you get

The chance to apply your knowledge of thermodynamics and understanding of the structure of the steam cycle to an industry that is once again becoming more talked about with possible new production around the corner.

Requirement specification

We are looking for you who plan to complete your degree project in the spring of 2025 and who are studying the Master's program in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering with Physics, Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

You are in the final stage of your education and are interested in some of the above-mentioned areas and have a good understanding and interest in thermodynamics, the steam cycle and process systems. It is an advantage if you have worked with Ebsilon Professional before. Good knowledge of Swedish and English is a requirement.

The job in nuclear modeling is especially suitable for those with an interest in one or more of the areas below:

  • Energy engineering
  • Modeling and simulation of thermodynamic processes
  • New CHP, CCHP technology
  • Energy efficiency
  • Sustainable development
  • Nuclear power
  • Electrolysis and hydrogen production
  • Technoeconomic calculations

As the position operates in security classified areas, you will undergo drug tests and security clearances before work can begin. Security classification placement may require certain citizenship requirements.
