Luleå University of Technology is one of Sweden's leading universities in the field of machine learning, especially in deep learning, with ELLIS researchers (European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems) in various stages, as well as unique labs for field robotics, deep learning and human-computer interaction. Furthermore, Luleå University of Technology is very strong in industrial collaboration. The Machine Learning (ML) group at the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering at Luleå University of Technology is now looking for excellent researchers to contribute to our growing activities. The ML group is part of the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP), Sweden's largest ever single research program, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems that act in collaboration with humans, adapt to their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and form intelligent systems-of-systems. WASP's vision is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software for the benefit of Swedish industry. Work tasks As an assistant professor, you will be involved in education, educational development and research at the university. You will also keep abreast of international developments in the subject and supervise PhD students. You will be expected to contribute to the development of the university, to seek external funding for the subject and to be available for management and administrative tasks. The duties of an Assistant Professor also include leading research projects, communicating results through academic publications, and being active in the research community in your own subject. Furthermore, you will be expected to collaborate with industry and society and contribute to the activities of the WASP program and its national activities. You will be given the opportunity to develop your independence as a researcher and to obtain an accreditation that may allow you to take up other teaching positions with higher qualification requirements. Eligibility Those who have demonstrated both academic and teaching excellence are eligible for appointment as assistant professor. Equal attention shall be paid to the assessment of pedagogical and scientific competence. To fulfill the requirements for employment as an assistant professor, the applicant must - demonstrated a research profile with clear progression after the dissertation work and scientific contributions equivalent to at least two doctoral theses - worked as an independent researcher, for example through - research-related positions of trust such as expert or reviewer - experience of applying for and being awarded external funding for research and development projects in competition - participated in national and/or international research projects and published together with researchers in research environments other than their own - have experience of supervision at doctoral level and have acted as co-supervisor for at least one doctoral student for at least two years, unless there are exceptional reasons for otherwise - demonstrated pedagogical competence - completed a course in higher education pedagogy equivalent to 7.5 credits, or otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge - the ability to interact with the surrounding community, for example by - making new knowledge available to the surrounding community - incorporate societal needs in research and/or educational contexts Assessment criteria The following assessment criteria apply to the position: - scientific excellence - pedagogical competence - other assessment criteria The following assessment criteria apply to this post (listed in order of importance): - research expertise in the field mentioned at the beginning of this advertisement - mobility/international experience (e.g. doctoral degree outside Sweden and/or significant time after doctoral degree outside Sweden) - excellence in basic research (whether theory- or application-driven), preferably with strong publications in machine learning and AI arenas - pedagogical expertise - competence in the development and leadership of activities and staff at the university - the ability to collaborate with the wider community - the ability to obtain external research and development funding - ability to communicate research and development work The under-represented gender is given priority if two candidates have similar qualifications.
