The Applied Geophysics research group is part of the Division of Geosciences and Environmental Engineering at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering. The division consists of about 35 employees including researchers, teachers and project managers. The position as Associate Senior Lecturer is at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering, where Luleå University of Technology has gathered research in, among other things, geoscience, geotechnics, mining and metallurgy and civil technology. Teaching in applied geophysics takes place within the framework of the Swedish School of Mines at Luleå University of Technology. The department has well-developed collaborations with research institutes, industrial partners, universities and other authorities in both research projects and student projects. The environment at the department is open, dynamic and brings together researchers from about twenty different nationalities as well as PhD students and students from all over the world. Subject description Applied Geophysics encompasses the study of how the laws and methods of physics can be used to understand the properties of rocks and loose deposits. This includes the development and application of methods for exploration and investigation of natural resources such as mineral deposits and water, and for environmental and infrastructure-related issues. Duties and responsibilities Applied geophysics covers a wide range of geophysical methods and the assistant professor is expected to have the ability, interest and willingness to contribute with teaching in relevant methods. Collaboration with teachers in other geoscience disciplines is an integral part of the duties. Research-based teaching is seen as important to maintain high quality and to be in line with new developments in applied geophysics. Therefore, the Associate Professor is expected to actively participate in research projects. The position entails that you will: - Be responsible for developing, teaching and examining courses in applied geophysics. - Supervise students and follow the international development of the subject - Work on research tasks (e.g. applying for external research funding, leading and collaborating in research projects, communicating and disseminating research results via academic publications) - Networking and collaborating with national and international stakeholders - Be active in the research community within your subject Eligibility Eligible to be employed as an Associate Senior Lecturer is a person who has completed a doctoral degree or has a foreign doctoral degree that is considered equivalent to a doctoral degree. Priority should be given to those who have completed a doctoral degree within five years of the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the doctorate may have been obtained earlier. Assessment criteria The following evaluation criteria apply to this position: - Scientific excellence - Teaching skills - Other assessment criteria Other assessment criteria (weighted equally): - Ability to lead and develop research initiatives - Experience in research projects - Experience in teaching - Ability to cooperate with the surrounding community - Ability to collaborate within the University - Ability to obtain external funding for research and development - Good communication skills in English, both oral and written. Duration of employment The duration of this post is four years. Promotion to Senior Lecturer An Associate Senior Lecturer shall, upon application, be promoted to Senior Lecturer and appointed for an indefinite period. If he/she is qualified for employment as a senior lecturer and is assessed as suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria set out below. At the assessment, the associate senior lecturer must have completed a course in higher education pedagogy equivalent to 7.5 credits or have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way. During the period of employment, the associate senior lecturer must also have contributed independently, to a considerable extent and with high quality, to the university's research and demonstrated good teaching skills.
