We are now starting a multidisciplinary project integrating mining and rock engineering, machine elements, economics and law with a consortium consisting of Luleå University of Technology, LKAB and Vattenfall. For the project, we are looking for a PhD student in Forensic Science to contribute to the interdisciplinary research spanning natural sciences, engineering and social sciences to address challenges related to underground storage of hydrogen. Subject description Jurisprudence is the study of legal rules and their creation, content and application. Research at Luleå University of Technology focuses on environmental and natural resource law in a broad sense and includes such parts of civil law, public law, international law and EU law that are relevant to environmental and nature conservation and which are related to the utilization and management of natural resources and energy. Project description You will work in the SUV project (Research and Technology Development on Large Scale Underground Hydrogen Storage Systems in Mining Areas) together with two other PhD students, a postdoc and senior researchers with expertise in law, economics, rock mechanics, rock excavation design and materials science. The project contributes to the green transition and carbon neutrality of the steel industry in Norrbotten by developing large-scale underground hydrogen storage (UHS) technology in mines/mining areas, including abandoned production levels. The project involves a comprehensive investigation and evaluation of technical, economic, legal, safety and regulatory aspects related to a future application of large-scale UHS in mining areas, promoting both a circular economy and renewable energy use for fossil-free steel production in future integrated value chains. As a PhD student in the project, you get a unique chance to contribute to sustainable development and the creation of a fossil-free society. Work tasks You will be given an individual study plan to follow. As a PhD student, you are expected to actively participate in the department's research environment, which means that you will practice scientific work in the form of publishing scientific articles in journals and at national and international conferences. You will also take compulsory and elective postgraduate courses. In addition, you may have the opportunity to try out the role of a teacher. The location is Luleå, but the doctoral studies also mean that you will take courses elsewhere, as well as undertake study trips and conference trips to promote the development of valuable contacts, both in Sweden and internationally. You are also given opportunities to influence the department's and the division's activities, which is why we appreciate enterprising and driving people. The work as a PhD student is problem-based. You will develop your skills to identify, delimit, formulate and address problems in legal science. You will develop your ability to work with theoretical and analytical issues. Qualifications To be admitted to the doctoral program in jurisprudence at Luleå University of Technology, you must have a master's degree in jurisprudence or legal education, as well as very good knowledge of oral and written communication in Swedish and English. Selection and ranking among the applicants will be made with regard to the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of the merits presented regarding the depth and breadth of their education and on their critical and analytical ability regarding scientific production, such as degree projects from undergraduate and advanced level and any other written scientific production. Experience in scientific writing, particularly in the field of environmental law, as well as an understanding of and interest in issues relating to the law and legal principles in relation to ecologically, socially and economically sustainable development is an advantage.
