LTU ARC (Arts-based Research Center) is a platform for interdisciplinary research at the intersection of art and science. An overarching ambition of LTU ARC is the creation of forms of interdisciplinary and artistic co-creation, where the collaborative also includes inclusive methods of citizen science. Subject description For the subject description of the subject Musical Performance, see link Musical Performance | Luleå University of Technology (ltu.se) Project description GEMM (Gesture, Embodiment and Machines in Music) is a research cluster within LTU ARC that, through an interdisciplinary approach, unites researchers in musical performance, sound technology and stage production. Studio Acusticum and the University Organ constitute infrastructure of national and international importance. GEMM conducts basic research in musical and scenic performance through the development of methods for multimodal data collection and analysis. In the study of user-instrument interaction, the research group seeks new knowledge about composition, interpretation and improvisation, but also about technological mediation and scenic spaces. At the same time, applied research is important, and here the collaboration with professional actors in music and theater is a central factor. GEMM aims to drive developments in music and theater, regionally, nationally and internationally. In direct collaboration with regional actors, new artistic projects, compositions and technological tools are created that explore the role of the performing arts in society with a focus on sustainability and inclusion. As a PhD student, you will be trained in scientific work in the form of publishing scientific articles in journals and at national and international conferences. There are good opportunities to shape both daily tasks and research questions. The work tasks consist of research studies with the possibility of also doing departmental service. Regular attendance is a prerequisite and the position is based on the doctoral student mainly staying at the Theater Academy in Luleå. Doctoral seminars take place at both the Luleå and Piteå campuses. Qualifications Basic eligibility for doctoral education is granted to those who have: completed a second-cycle degree, completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at the second-cycle level, or in some other way within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.
