The construction sector plays a central and crucial role in the development of society through its responsibility for creating and maintaining the infrastructure necessary for sustainable growth. In the coming years, billions of dollars will be invested in major projects for a more sustainable society nationally as well as globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these highly topical research projects and the societal transformation that follows. We have a wide range of programs to match the skills that are in demand. We hope that you will help us build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. We want to strengthen the research group Construction Production and Technology at the Division of Industrial and Sustainable Construction with a new PhD student to build long-term applied research that explains what affects value creation and efficiency in large construction projects in close collaboration with industry. The research group conducts research and education in the construction process - from early planning and design through construction to management. Our core competencies are currently in management and information automation of the construction process and in industrial construction and production systems. The research group is a leader in Sweden in its core area and has about 25 employees, of which 10 are PhD students. The research is applied and based on current issues in close collaboration with the construction sector's stakeholders; companies and other organizations. Project description The PhD project is linked to the research project - Value creation in construction projects. The construction contractor and other project stakeholders often have an intuitive knowledge of what factors contribute to positive and negative values in the construction process, but there is a lack of deeper systematic and validating research on explanatory factors for what stops value creation in construction to be able to safely and effectively act on these factors. The aim of this project is, from a construction contractor perspective, to identify factors and validate critical categories that explain what drives and hinders value creation in construction projects. As a PhD student, you will identify and describe, in dialog with other researchers and industry partners and from a systems theory perspective, these factors and critical categories based on qualitative and indicative statistical analysis. There may also be collaboration with closely related research projects, both within Luleå University of Technology and other universities nationally and internationally. Work tasks As a doctoral student, you work with a doctoral degree as the final goal after the equivalent of four years of full-time research education. The doctoral education includes both training in scientific work and completion of doctoral courses relevant to the research area. Those employed as doctoral students must primarily devote themselves to their research, but the position also includes departmental duties such as teaching and administrative work up to 20% of full-time. The work as a PhD student offers great opportunities to define and plan your own daily tasks and how they will be carried out in dialog with your supervisors and other parties. Qualifications Eligibility requires a degree in civil engineering (or equivalent basic eligibility requirements, Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 7 § 39) in relevant specialization, civil engineering, civil engineering, architecture, or industrial economics. You are expected to take initiative, develop your own ideas and work independently but also have a high level of collaboration. The research results will be presented at project meetings, conferences and in scientific journals, so it is good if you feel comfortable in that environment. As the research work is conducted as applied research and is highly communicative in nature, we require you to have very good ability to express yourself in speech and writing in English and Swedish. The research methodology of the project requires, for example, the ability to follow and understand the content of construction coordination meetings and data analysis. Meritorious criteria are: - knowledge in design management, construction project management and control - knowledge and skills in the construction process - knowledge and skills in data analysis, business intelligence or statistical methods For further information on specific doctoral programs see: Curricula for doctoral programs in the Faculty of Engineering. Continuing an academic career at Luleå University of Technology can be an opportunity for further development.
