We shape the future through innovative education and groundbreaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefits. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of almost SEK 2.1 billion per year. We are currently 1,900 employees and have 18,700 students.
In the coming years, billions of kronor will be invested in Norrbotten and Västerbotten in major projects aimed at a more sustainable society nationally as well as globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these highly topical research projects and the social transformation that follows. We have a wide range of programs to match the skills that are in demand. We hope you will help us build the sustainable companies and societies of the future.
The Machine Learning research group at Luleå University of Technology is looking for a PhD student in Machine Learning. We offer well-equipped laboratory facilities for research and an excellent interdisciplinary academic network in Sweden and internationally.
Subject description
Machine learning focuses on methods by which computer systems use data to improve their own performance, understanding and to make concrete predictions and is closely related to applications.
Project description
This PhD project focuses on developing the field of multimodal data analysis and generation by integrating computer vision, natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning to enable innovative interactions with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The goal is to develop a system that can analyze and synthesize multimodal data - by combining visual images with textual input - to improve the capabilities of UAVs in real-world applications.
The project aims to efficiently handle unannotated or partially annotated datasets through the use of semi supervised/self supervised learning, enabling scalable and cost-effective solutions.
The outcome will include a proof-of-concept demo demonstrating multimodal data-driven interactions with drones.
You will also be involved in the MARTINA project. This project drives innovation and development forward through applied AI and advanced digitalization to strengthen the competitiveness of the region's SMEs.
Work tasks
As a PhD student, you are expected to perform both experimental and theoretical work within your research study and communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. Most of your working time will be devoted to research studies. In addition, you will have the opportunity to gain experience in the teaching role by participating in our teaching mission.
Qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD student with the following competencies and skills:
Technical competencies:
-Strong foundation in computer vision (e.g. object detection, image segmentation) and NLP (e.g. text reasoning, language models).
-Knowledge of generative AI models (e.g. transformers, GANs) for text, image or cross-modal data.
-Experience in self-supervised and weakly supervised learning.
-Knowledge in UAV technology or experience in embedded systems is an advantage.
-Good programming skills in Python or similar language.
As a person, you should have good analytical and problem-solving skills. You should also have excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Importantly, you should also have good collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary and dynamic research team.
