We have a wide range of programs to match the skills that are in demand. We hope that you want to help us build the sustainable companies and communities of the future. Waste Technology is looking for you who want to contribute to the development of new methods and influence the future of waste management in your doctoral studies. Waste Technology is located at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering, which is a subject-wide department with many successful research groups and recognized educational programs. Waste Technology at LTU is ranked among the top ten research groups globally in the field. Subject description Waste Technology covers all stages of waste management in society - generation, collection, treatment and disposal of waste, including recovery and recycling. The research aims to develop tools and methods for sustainable waste management. Project description This project will focus on further developing the electrooxidation method to achieve complete degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in certain waste streams. Electrooxidation is a technique that uses an electric current through electrodes to generate reactive substances that can effectively degrade PFAS molecules. The degradation mechanism of PFAS is very complex and not yet fully understood, leading to an incomplete estimation of fluoride mass balance after treatment. A careful evaluation of the process as well as the selection of suitable electrode materials is required to achieve efficient and complete PFAS degradation by electrooxidation. This recruitment is linked to the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE). WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest ever materials science initiative in Sweden and will involve major investments at Sweden's top universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science. Read more about WISE. Work tasks A PhD position involves both theoretical and practical work. The PhD student is trained in scientific work in the form of publishing scientific articles in journals and at national and international conferences. In addition, you may have the opportunity to try out the role of teacher. The PhD student will follow an individual study plan. Depending on previous knowledge, the training program is complemented by courses and training of practical skills. Qualifications Applicants must have a Master's degree in engineering or natural sciences (environmental engineering, chemical engineering, materials engineering, etc.) or equivalent (according to the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 7 § 39) and very good knowledge of oral and written communication in English. Knowledge of electrochemical processes, modeling and statistics is an advantage.
