Luleå University of Technology is growing rapidly with world-leading expertise in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and groundbreaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefits. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 2 billion per year. We are currently 1,500 employees and have 17,900 students. In the coming years, billions of kronor will be invested in Norrbotten and Västerbotten in major projects aimed at a more sustainable society nationally as well as globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these highly topical research projects and the social transformation that follows. We have a wide range of programs to match the skills that are in demand. We hope you will help us build the sustainable businesses and communities of the future. The Geotechnical Engineering research group offers a postdoctoral position in the field of mass management - processing of surplus masses and material logistics. Central issues for the subject Geotechnics | Luleå University of Technology (ltu.se) concern dams and dam construction in short and long term perspective (hydropower and mining dams), environmental geotechnics (utilization of residual products, dredging, dredged material management, landfill design, sedimentation and erosion), cold site geotechnics (frost, frost heave, frost heave, permafrost and snow mechanics), advanced soil mechanics (mechanical properties of sulphide soils, organic soils and tailings etc. Environmental geotechnics, such as the handling and processing of surplus masses into construction materials, is a growing and important issue in connection with the major infrastructure planned in northern Sweden. Material logistics and quality assurance of the refined fractions are important prerequisites for circular mass management Subject description Geotechnical engineering includes soil mechanics, soil material science and foundation engineering. the subject includes applications in civil engineering and infrastructure construction, energy and mineral extraction. Project description The main focus of the project is to develop fast and reliable methods based on image analysis for quality control of sorted soil fractions to achieve resource-efficient mass handling. This involves both identifying and quantifying the presence of foreign materials such as bricks or plastics and efficient material logistics. The second focus of the project is to assess and improve the logistics of both the excavated material and the valued fraction, as transportation to and from the treatment plant affects both economy and environmental benefits. Work tasks The postdoc position involves both laboratory work and evaluation of results using image analysis, in collaboration with industrial partners. One question to investigate is to what extent AI can be used for image analysis. For material logistics, it is important that the candidate has an understanding of the complex logistics systems that arise in construction projects. Experience in location modeling is also desirable. As a Postdoc, you are expected to work independently with scientific work in the form of publishing scientific articles in journals and at national and international conferences. Qualifications To be eligible for employment, a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree in civil engineering or equivalent is required. A degree obtained not more than three years before the closing date for applications for this post would be an advantage. If there are special reasons, those who have obtained a doctorate earlier may be considered, for example in the case of various types of statutory leave. A specialization in geotechnical engineering with experience in location modelling and working with complex logistics systems is an advantage. Basic skills in image analysis and or use of AI tools are valuable. Fluency in writing and speaking in English is essential. Swedish or another Scandinavian language is an advantage. B driving license is a requirement. Information to be provided This position is for a full-time employment period of two years. Place of employment: Luleå Planned start date: January 2025.
