The Unit of Political Science is part of the Division of Social Sciences which, in addition to political science, also includes the subjects of law, economics and history. Within the division, research focuses on various social science aspects of the environment and natural resources. The division conducts both intra- and interdisciplinary projects where researchers from political science work together with, for example, researchers in economics and law. Research collaboration also takes place regularly with academic disciplines from the Faculty of Science and Technology.
Subject description
Political science is the scientific study of politics and political systems and includes both empirical and theoretical studies. Research focuses on issues related to how natural resources, energy and environmental conflicts and agreements are managed by individuals and interest groups as well as by political and administrative systems. Dominant research areas are public policy and administration, institutional analysis, comparative politics, public opinion studies and political theory.
Project description
The political science subject at Luleå University of Technology is in an expansive phase and therefore needs to recruit a postdoc to work in research projects that address the social and political challenges surrounding the management of natural resources and sustainable societal transformation. The research is funded by the Swedish Research Council Formas and the Marcus and Marianne Wallberg Foundation.
Work tasks
As a postdoc, you will participate in the research described above. You will be involved in the planning and implementation of the research together with other members of the project team and collaboration partners. The work in the project comprises 80 percent of your position and 20 percent departmental service in the form of teaching at basic and advanced levels in political science or other tasks. The applicant is also expected to participate in the collegial work of the subject and the department and to participate in the work of applying for external research grants. As the research examines a Swedish context, good knowledge of the Swedish language is necessary. The implementation of the project also requires the ability to work independently and with others.
Qualifications
To be eligible, applicants must have a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree in political science and good knowledge of both English and Swedish. It is an advantage if your degree was obtained no more than three years before the closing date for applications for this position.
Meritorious for the position are (weighted equally):
- Good knowledge of the political science literature related to environmental and natural resource policy
- Experience of research related to Swedish environmental and natural resource policy (especially minerals and forests)
- Familiarity with theories related to political mobilization, social movements and deliberative democracy theory
- Familiarity with case study methodology and qualitative methods and experience with quantitative methods
- Experience in studying political mobilization and media expression
- Publication of research results in international peer-reviewed journals
- Experience in teaching political science at bachelor and master level
- Experience in assignments demonstrating leadership, initiative and collaboration skills
