Dissertation

If you want to test and develop your skills in modeling dynamic systems, we have a thesis that suits you. The thesis aims to develop a mathematical model of the dynamic system of temperature control in heat treatment furnaces for heavy plate by performing system identification based on experimental data. To succeed in the assignment, we believe that you have a degree in control engineering or mechatronics. Our hope is that you are ambitious, curious, independent and result-oriented. Becoming part of the SSAB family means joining us on a journey. A journey that we believe is crucial for the future of the planet and sustainability. Steel has been one of the most important materials for the development of our society and will continue to be so in the future. In our homes, in bridges connecting our cities and in the cars of tomorrow. At SSAB, we are proud of our history and our leadership in high strength steel. At the same time, we are aware that steel production is one of the industries that emits the most greenhouse gases in the world. This must change. We have therefore developed the world's first fossil-free process for steel production and around 2030 we will be largely fossil-free. As part of SSAB, you will be instrumental in realizing this goal and thus contribute to the green transition of the entire steel industry.

About the assignment

Temperature control in heat treatment furnaces for heavy plate is a complex process due to its non-minimum phase nature. Effective control of these furnaces is critical to ensure that the plate obtains the desired material properties after heat treatment. Development of a robust and accurate temperature control strategy requires an in-depth understanding of the dynamic system as well as an accurate system identification based on experimental data. The objective of the thesis is to:

1. perform experiments to collect data from heat treatment furnaces.

2. use system identification techniques to develop a mathematical model of the dynamic system.

3. evaluate and analyze the calculations using Matlab's System Identification Toolbox or equivalent software.
