Are you the one?

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher for experimental studies and modeling of the aurora and ionosphere. The selected candidate will participate in the analysis of observations of spectacular luminous clouds and ionized plasma, using a unique optical camera system for aurora studies and the international research radar EISCAT.

Tasks

The tasks mainly include analyzing data from the sounding rocket experiment: Barium Release Optical and Radio (BROR), which was carried out on March 23, 2023 at the Esrange space base outside Kiruna. The BROR experiment aims to study small-scale processes and structures in the ionosphere through active modification of the ionosphere - using barium in combination with simultaneous ground-based optical measurements and radar observations of the resulting plasma clouds.

The selected candidate will be involved in all steps of the research process, including processing of raw optical and radar data - modeling of auroral processes in the ionosphere, and interpretation of data.

Qualifications

The candidate should have a PhD in a space-related field by the time of the hiring decision. We will give priority consideration to candidates with a degree obtained in the last three years. If you have an older degree and wish to refer to special circumstances (e.g. parental leave), this should be clearly stated in your application.

Previous experience in working with optical and radar data from the northern lights is considered a great advantage. The position requires programming skills necessary for scientific research, as well as skills in programming languages such as Python, Julia and MATLAB are highly desirable.

What we can offer you

We can offer you a workplace with flexible working hours, up to seven weeks of vacation per year, well-developed wellness with well-being activities, health benefits and workplace gym.

What we are most proud to be able to offer you is varied and interesting work tasks, nice colleagues and a creative and free workplace where everyone is given their own responsibility.

The position is located in Kiruna and is initially offered on a two-year contract. Start date as soon as possible or as agreed. We apply individual salary setting. Applications should include a CV with a list of publications, a cover letter describing relevant experience and contact details of two professional references.
