Company description

We at waterfall have decided to make it possible to live fossil-free. To succeed, we, as one of Europe's largest energy companies, must first become completely fossil-free ourselves. But that is not enough. To contribute to a fossil-free society, we must do more than just focus on sustainable energy production.

Because we are convinced that if we are to make it possible to live fossil-free, we must look at the challenge from a broader perspective than just producing energy in a sustainable way.

Power Climate Smarter living – that's our purpose. We are looking for talented students who want to help us on our journey towards a fossil-free life. By writing a degree project at Vattenfall, you get a unique opportunity to contribute to our purpose. All we ask of you is that you release your superpowers and share your energy with us.

About the role

Vattenfall works for the development of tomorrow's sustainable and robust energy system. The assignment consists of investigating the technical and economic possibilities for integrating waste heat from current and future nuclear power plants into existing district heating systems.

The degree project is part of Vattenfall's R&D portfolio HEAT, where the overall goal is to develop efficient energy system solutions with regard to the environment, climate, economy and societal benefit.

The background and vision for the ex-job is to show how and if the recovery of residual heat can affect the traditional ways of producing district heating. The connection of the need for energy sources at local or national level and the interaction with the electricity system on the producer and consumption side.

Expected scope:

  • A literature study with a focus on gathering information on a national and international level within the subject area
  • Analysis of available literature material considering the changes in conditions and conditions discussed on a national, European and international basis.
  • Preparation of technical and financial specifications for relevant infrastructure.
  • Comparison between different nuclear heating options: residual heat from existing plants and newly installed options based on SMR (Small Modular Reactors).
  • Design of an integrated district heating/residual heat infrastructure.
  • Competitive analysis against existing heating methods; necessary conditions for the idea to be realized.

Requirements specification

The degree project is at master's level and comprises 30 higher education credits within the main field. Applicants should be in the final phase of a master's degree in energy systems/energy technology or equivalent and have some knowledge of infrastructure design and planning.
