Company description

Power Climate Smarter living - that's our purpose. We are looking for talented students to help us on our journey towards fossil-free living. Writing a thesis at Vattenfall gives you a unique opportunity to contribute to our purpose. All we ask is that you unleash your superpowers and share your energy with us.

About the role

About the thesis

The EM (Mechanical Engineering) unit within the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management (SKB) has the task of designing HVAC and process systems for the new nuclear facilities to be built to dispose of radioactive waste from the Swedish nuclear power plants.

Prior to the expansion of the final repository for spent nuclear fuel in Forsmark (SFK), the next step is to produce system documents for the underground facility. In connection with this, SKB intends to build a model of the plant's ventilation system in the tool Ventsim, which is currently a well-used software for applications in the mining industry.

The purpose of the thesis is to evaluate the usability of the system for SKB's operations and then especially linked to the future tunnel expansion of SFK.

The objectives are to;

  • Review the software and report which system functionality is applicable to SKB
  • Build a basic model in Ventsim of the Nuclear Fuel Repository's ventilation system based on the current underground layout for the ramp and central area
  • Perform initial simulations and verify the model against pressure and flow calculations
  • If time is available, perform in-depth simulations, e.g. regarding
  • possible energy optimizations in the plant with smart control of air flow depending on the current emission source; vehicle traffic, blasting gas dilution, radon dilution
  • management and control of blasting pressure during rock excavation to avoid damage
  • prediction of radon levels in different parts of the plant, or
  • the effectiveness of fire gas dilution in a scenario with fire in different parts of the plant (and evaluate time for safe evacuation)
  • International benchmark if there are new/better systems than Ventsim
  • Evaluate and make recommendation to SKB on future use of the software and propose prioritized steps.

SKB will pay for the student's training in the Ventsim tool (about 3-4 days with external system expert) which constitutes gratuity for the thesis.

This assignment is for 1 student.

About Vattenfall

We at Vattenfall are determined to make fossil-free living possible within a generation. To succeed, as one of Europe's largest energy companies, we must first become completely fossil-free ourselves. But that is not enough. To contribute to a fossil-free society, we need to do more than just focus on sustainable energy production.

Because we are convinced that if we are to make it possible to live fossil-free within a generation, we need to look at the challenge from a broader perspective than just producing energy in a sustainable way.

Follow us on the road to a fossil-free life.
