Company description
Power Climate Smarter living - that's our purpose. We are looking for talented students to help us on our journey towards fossil-free living. Writing a thesis at Vattenfall gives you a unique opportunity to contribute to our purpose. All we ask of you is to unleash your superpowers and share your energy with us.
Forsmark Working Group
The NEAM group has a coordinating function in the field of plant mechanics and plant process and monitors and ensures that the plant status is maintained and documented in its area. Furthermore, the group identifies plant needs and provides resources for both maintenance and renewal of the plant.
About the role
About the thesis
The thesis will be carried out to report the reasonableness of utilizing the cold seawater of the winter half-year in a better way, ie is it possible and economically justifiable to optimize the current mode of operation with its regulation and enable operation with higher electrical power in our plants in winter.
The aim is thus to increase the power in winter by utilizing the cold seawater more efficiently. This can be achieved with colder water, but not too cold (ice), by not preheating incoming water as much as today. Today, heated seawater that has passed through the plant is recirculated. The heated water is mixed with incoming seawater to prevent ice formation on the intake side. Today, no regulation is carried out at Forsmark 1 and 2. Manual regulation is carried out at Forsmark 3.
Historically, experiments have been carried out at Vattenfall with the aim of obtaining good control over the phenomenon of kravis, its occurrence and how kravis can be avoided. Detection experiments have also been carried out in hydropower, i.e. ways of detecting kravis in water before adhesion occurs on, for example, intake grids. Once adhesion has begun, further growth can occur rapidly with the result that the water inflow is partially or completely blocked, which affects the ability to produce electricity.

Diversity and inclusion - in everything we do
We are convinced that heterogeneous teams can outperform homogeneous teams. But we can only unleash and harness the power of diversity when everyone feels included. Read more about our important work on diversity and inclusion https://careers.vattenfall.com/se/jobba-med-oss/mangfald-inkludering/
About Vattenfall
We at Vattenfall are determined to make fossil-free living possible within a generation. To succeed, as one of Europe's largest energy companies, we must first become completely fossil-free ourselves. But that is not enough. To contribute to a fossil-free society, we need to do more than just focus on sustainable energy production.
Because we are convinced that if we are to make it possible to live fossil-free within a generation, we need to look at the challenge from a broader perspective than just producing energy in a sustainable way.
Follow us on the road to a fossil-free life.
