The Viscaria mine in Kiruna is a vital step towards increasing Sweden's and the EU's self-sufficiency in critical minerals. With its high copper content, assessed mineral resources, calculated mineral reserves, strategic geographical location, and a growing team of experts, Viscaria is well-positioned to deliver quality copper while adhering to the highest environmental and sustainability standards. By utilising the latest mining techniques, sophisticated logistics, and advanced water treatment, Viscaria strives to become one of the world's most sustainable copper-iron producers.
At Viscaria, we are committed to fostering a culture of equality, diversity, inclusion, and respect for all. In 2024, our dedication was recognised when Viscaria earned a place on the AllBright Green List—a recognition celebrating companies that have made significant strides in promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Do you want to be part of this exciting journey? Join us in an operation where courage, commitment, and collaboration are the foundation of our success. We are currently looking for a number of Summer Geologists to join our geology department during the summer months with start in May/June and lasting until September.
Job opportunity
Our Summer Geologists are based in Kiruna, focusing on the Viscaria Copper-Iron project, which is in an exciting phase of near-mine and district-scale exploration. This presents a unique opportunity to learn about discovering new orebodies and integrating them into an upcoming copper mining operation. The region offers immense potential for major copper discoveries and provides exceptional outdoor leisure opportunities near numerous Scandinavian attractions.
The work primarily involves drill-core logging, including core preparation, geological and geotechnical data collection, sampling, and field work, all following rigorous QAQC protocols. These activities target zones between 400 and 1.7km depth within a well-preserved IOCG-IOA system, offering a rare chance to study both the tops and bottoms of such formations. The data collected during this phase forms the foundation for subsequent geotechnical, resource, and economic studies.
You will be part of a diverse team of geologists, supervised by experienced experts, but may also work independently at times. The role can be physically demanding, as handling drill cores requires resilience. This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in a safe, top-tier mining jurisdiction in Europe, providing the essential skills to embark on a rewarding career in the mineral industry.
Education and experience
If you are currently studying geology or have just completed a university education in geology with good qualifications this opportunity is for you.
We expect the applicant has strong interest and in any or several of the disciplines of mineral exploration eg. field mapping, exploration geophysics, geochemistry or structural geology. You should have a positive, courageous and curious attitude to getting discoveries done and be a team player with a safety-first mindset. As we have an international team, we require good proficiency in English language and a class B (or valid equivalent) driving license.
