A Sustainable Hub for Work and Innovation in Northern Sweden

In the pursuit of sustainable growth, Piteå has positioned itself as a key player in the green transition, actively contributing to the shift from fossil-based economies to more environmentally friendly alternatives. The north of Sweden is witnessing historic industrial investments aimed at fostering this green transformation.

Process Industry

  • The backbone of Piteå's economy, the process industry, thrives on a rich history rooted in forestry and sawmills. Home to major paper industries like Smurfit Kappa Piteå and Munksunds Pappersbruk/SCA, Piteå also hosts the globally renowned bio-refinery, SunPine, since 2007.
  • Smurfit Kappa Piteå stands as Europe's largest kraftliner mill and Piteå's largest private employer, annually producing over 700,000 tons of kraftliner primarily from virgin fibers but increasingly incorporating recycled materials. With up to 800 employees, the mill plays a vital role in the local workforce.
  • SunPine, a world-leading bio-refinery, innovates sustainable products from crude tall oil, a byproduct of paper mills. The refinery primarily extracts tall diesel, a low CO2 emission biofuel distributed through Preem, contributing to a significant reduction in fossil CO2 emissions. Moreover, the waste heat generated is utilized for district heating in the industrial area.

Renewable Energy

Piteå actively contributes to the transition to renewable energy, with initiatives like Markbygden 1101, Europe's largest onshore wind farm(!!!!). The municipality is also a hub for solar cell research, collaborating with RISE on various projects, including one of Sweden's largest rooftop solar installation at Lindbäck Bygg.

Upcoming ventures into hydrogen, encompassing both production facilities and research, further highlight Piteå's commitment to clean energy. PiteEnergi exclusively offers renewable electricity, and local transport, Pite Stadsbuss, operates on electricity. Companies like SunPine and Wibax, pioneering sustainable chemicals, add to the city's green credentials.

Furthermore, Piteå's strategic location between Luleå and Skellefteå positions it as a prime location for career opportunities. With billions of investments throughout northern Sweden, there are ample commuting opportunities. Additionally, the municipality encourages entrepreneurship, providing free expert guidance and access to a thriving business ecosystem to support the establishment and growth of new ventures. Piteå stands as a beacon of sustainability, innovation, and career prospects in the evolving landscape of northern Sweden.

So, if you're contemplating your next career move, think of Piteå as the place where traditional industries do the tango with cutting-edge innovations, where the wind turbines sway to the rhythm of the northern lights, and where even the city's waste heat is working overtime – talk about a hot job market!
